A Change of Self

Very often a change of self is needed more than a change of scene. – Arthur Christopher Benson

Of all the changes we start, a change of self can sometimes be the most challenging. For some, it is difficult to do because of fear. Many shy away from the responsibility that changing the self implies while others don’t even realize that a change is needed.

In contrast, it is generally easy to change our job, our friends, our relationships, our material things and etc. But, without a change of self, we find that our relationships stay the same and our jobs have the same difficulties.

True change comes from changing ourselves.

It really doesn’t have to be a big change. Sometimes (actually most of the time), subtle shifts in our attitudes can make dramatic changes in the picture called our life. Looking for little things to like about ourselves can have a tremendous affect on improving our self-esteem. Once you get good at that, you can begin to accept things that you don’t like about yourself. 🙂

Finding the humor in all situations is another great technique to shift out attitudes. Stepping back and looking for the lesson in events that happen to us can put some meaning around seemingly inexplicable occurrences. Another way is to get a different perspective from a close friend or significant other. Have a conversation with yourself and ask “If I was asked for advice by a friend that was going through the same thing, what would I tell them?”

Go and take that first step to changing yourself.

Have a great day!
