You do not determine your success by comparing yourself to others, rather you determine your success by comparing your accomplishments to your capabilities. – Zig Ziglar
Looking at success this way completely changes things. Competition is eliminated. Bad feelings and fear of judgment from others goes away.
When we compare our accomplishments to our capabilities we arrive at a much clearer and objective picture of our true success. Thinking about it, why would we want to compare ourselves to others? Some people will be less skillful in the area in question, therefore we may feel inflated thinking we are better than we truly are and better than the other person. On the flip side, some people will be vastly more skilled than us at a particular activity, therefore making us feel deflated and that we will never be skilled in that area.
Both scenarios are false views. If we continually strive to accomplish to our capabilities we will feel good about ourselves knowing that we are doing the best we can. We would know when to push ourselves if we are not performing up to our skill level. And we would know when we are doing the best we can do. That’s a good thing.
So, next time you are comparing yourself to someone else, stop and reevaluate what you are doing. Turn your attention to your true capabilities. Then make the comparison.
Have a great day!
